Concrete Pool Decks in Long Beach

We tear out tired pool decks and pour new ones that shed water away from the pool, grip under wet feet and stay more comfortable in summer sun. You get clear answers on finish, slope and cost before any work starts.

A deck that works with the pool, not against it

A pool deck takes more abuse than most concrete around your home. It stays wet, it sees chlorine or salt water every day, and bare feet cross it at a run. The slab has to slope away from the water, drain where it should and meet the coping without trapping water at the joint.

We have been pouring concrete for 15+ years, and we hold a license from the California State License Board (CSLB). On a pool deck that experience shows in the details you notice later: puddles that never form, a finish that doesn't scorch your feet, and joints placed where cracks are meant to go.

If your project is a larger outdoor space, our Concrete Backyards and Patios pages cover how we plan a deck alongside the rest of the yard.

What a new pool deck includes

  1. 01

    Removal and haul-off

We break out the old deck, protect the coping and tile line while we work, and haul the debris away.

  2. 02

    Compacted base

The ground is graded and compacted before forms go in. Most deck problems start with a soft or washed-out base, so we don't rush this part.

  3. 03

    Slope and drainage

We set the slab to fall gently away from the pool and toward drains or landscape. Water should leave the deck, never pool against the house or run back into the water.

  4. 04

    Reinforcement and joints

Rebar or wire is placed in the slab, and control joints are cut on a planned layout. A flexible joint at the coping lets the deck and pool shell move independently.

  5. 05

    Pool-friendly finish

Choose a light broom finish, a salt finish, a cool-deck texture coating or stamped concrete. Each one is slip-resistant when done right, and we explain how they differ in heat and upkeep.

  6. 06

    Sealing and cleanup

Where the finish calls for it, we apply a sealer suited to pool chemicals. The site is cleaned and the pool area left ready for you.

Signs it's time for a new pool deck

  • Water sits on the surface

Standing water after a swim means the slope is wrong or the slab has settled. It leads to algae, slick spots and staining.

  • Cracks that open or offset

Hairline cracks are common. Cracks with one side higher than the other are trip hazards next to water.

  • A gap at the coping

When the deck pulls away from the coping, water gets under the slab and into the soil around the pool shell.

  • Too hot to walk on

Dark or smooth concrete can get painful in full afternoon sun. A lighter color or a cool-deck coating makes a real difference.

  • Slick or worn finish

Years of chlorine and foot traffic polish the texture away. A deck that feels slippery when wet is worth replacing before someone falls.

How the job runs

  1. 1

    Walk-through and measurements

We look at the deck, the drains, the coping and how water leaves the yard. You get a written estimate with each part of the work listed.

  2. 2

    Demolition and prep

The old deck comes out and the pool is covered or protected so dust and slurry stay out of the water. Then we grade and compact the base.

  3. 3

    Forms, steel and slope

Forms are set to the planned slope, reinforcement goes in, and drains are positioned. We check fall before any concrete arrives.

  4. 4

    Pour and finish

The concrete is placed, leveled and given your chosen texture while it is still workable. Joints are tooled or saw-cut on the planned layout.

  5. 5

    Cure and handover

The slab cures for several days before foot traffic and longer before furniture. We walk the finished deck with you and explain care and sealing.

What moves the price of a pool deck

Pool deck pricing comes down to size, what has to come out first and the finish you choose. We price each item separately so you can see where the money goes and adjust the plan if you want.

Square footage and shape
Larger decks cost more overall, and curves around a freeform pool take more forming time than straight runs.
Removing the old deck
Thick slabs or old decks with heavy reinforcement take longer to break out and haul away.
Access to the backyard
A wide gate lets equipment in. A narrow side yard can mean a concrete pump or wheelbarrows, which adds labor.
Finish and coatings
A broom finish is the simplest. Salt finishes, cool-deck coatings and stamped patterns each add material and labor.
Drains and permits
Adding or relocating deck drains adds cost, and some scopes need a city permit. We tell you up front if yours does.

Pool deck questions

How long until we can use the pool area?

Light foot traffic is usually fine after a few days. Heavy furniture and planters should wait about a week. Full strength takes around a month, so we'll give you a simple schedule for your deck.

Which finish stays coolest?

Light colors and a cool-deck texture coating stay noticeably cooler than dark or smooth concrete. A light salt or broom finish is a good middle ground. We'll show you samples so you can feel the texture before deciding.

Is stamped concrete a good idea around a pool?

It can be, with a textured stamp and a slip-resistant additive in the sealer. Smooth, glossy stamped finishes get slick when wet, so we steer pool decks toward rougher patterns. Our Stamped Concrete page has more on the options.

Will the work affect the pool water?

We cover or protect the pool during demolition and the pour to keep dust and concrete out. Some fine dust can still get in, so plan to run the filter and check chemistry once we finish.

Is the deck covered by a warranty?

Yes. Your new pool deck comes with our 1-year warranty on the work. We'll walk you through what it covers when we review your estimate.
